  From November 14, 2011, the final of the 2011 China Telecom Final Contest for Skills of Network Installation, Connection and Maintenance was held in Shanghai. 31 teams representing different China Telecom’s branches in different provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions took part in the competition. Zhang Jiping and Zhang Chenshuang, vice general managers of China Telecom Group, as well as Guo Baomin, deputy director of the Masses Activities Bureau of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, were present in the opening and closing ceremonies of the campaign.
  This campaign is known as the largest staff training and competition China Telecom held in recent years. Actually, it is even rare for the three major telecom operators in China to hold such a big campaign to improve the skills of network installation, connection and maintenance.
  
  
  With the economic development and the increasing demand of users for broadband, China Telecom launched the project of “Broadband China – MONET City” at the beginning of 2011. Presently, the FTTH(Fiber to the Home) has covered 30 million users, realizing the great leap of bandwidth from original cable access to 100 Mb fiber-optic network and allowing the users to fully enjoy the fruits from information technology development. This put forward higher requirements for the service levels and skills of network installation, connection and maintenance.
  In order to improve the service level and skills of network installation, connection and maintenance and provide users with better communication network and services, the China Telecom Campaign for Skills of Network Installation, Connection and Maintenance was officially started in May 2011. This campaign combined the service learning, skill training and post verification together, and focused on training staff in their posts and improving their skills through competition. The campaign aimed at further promoting the skill improvement of the frontline maintenance providers and building a high-quality network installation, connection and maintenance team.
  It is known that about 80 thousand maintenance workers of China Telecom from 31 different provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions received the 3-month education and training through the special zone for online college competition training of China Telecom. The presence rate reached 100% and the training course greatly stimulated the employees’ enthusiasm of learning new skills. The tryouts in September screened out the best team from each place and the best lineup was forged for the final. Then, 31 delegations consisting of 124 players from China Telecom’s branches joined in the final. The final was divided into written test, practical operation and on-site demonstration to imitate the working scenes common in daily work. The experts checked the employees’ practical skills of laying out cables, launching mainstream devices, detecting and solving problems, etc.
  After five days’ wonderful and furious competition, the delegation of Shanghai won the first position of network installation, connection and maintenance. The runner-up title is shared by the branches of Guangdong and Jiangsu while the delegations from Hubei, Zhejiang and Anhui got the third place. 36 individuals were prized as well, with 3 first-class awardees, 3 second-class awardees ad 12 thirdclass awardees in each of the network installation and connection and the network maintenance. Guo Baomin, deputy director of the Masses Activities Bureau of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, said in the closing ceremony that this campaign had positively boosted the improvement of telecom workers’ quality and enterprise’s core competitive power and helped to fulfill the enterprise’s strategic goal. He also awarded the six excellent players of the campaign with the honorary titles of Central Enterprises’ Skilled Employees on behalf of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council.
  Zhang Jiping, vice general manager of China Telecom said that the improvement of installation and maintenance as well as the service levels will play an important role in improving the users’ experiences, promoting the project of “Broadband China – MONET City”, accelerating the development and transformation and continuing the scale development. He also said that China Telecom will hold similar campaigns in the future and the topic will be different every year to push the progress of maintenance levels.
