【摘要】否定是人们在学习英语的过程中经常会碰到的语法现象。它用来表示对所表达情况的否认。英语的否定结构形式多种多样，无论在思路上，还是在表达方式上，都与汉语有许多差异。如果只按字面意思理解，有时会造成误解。因此，在做英译汉和汉译英练习时，一定要认真体会其中的含义，不要望文生义，以防陷入这个可怕的迷宫。

否定，作为英语中常见的语法现象，可以运用多种手段来表示，使用否定词not， no， neither， nor， none， nothing等是人们最常用的手段。此外，使用含有否定意义的前缀和后缀，如前缀un？鄄， im？鄄， in？鄄， ir？鄄， il？鄄， dis？鄄； 后缀？鄄less， ？鄄free等表示否定，也是人们常用的手段之一。本文拟从介词的使用这一角度谈谈这一语法现象。可用于否定意义的介词及用法举例如下：
above： 超出……之外
e.g. The problem is above me. 这个问题我不懂。
against： 反对，违反
e.g. He is against this proposal. 他反对这个提议。
before： 与其……；宁愿……
e.g. She desired no one for husband before him. 她非他不嫁。
behind： 不如；比……差
e.g. Mary is behind the other girls in sewing.
玛丽缝纫不如别的女孩子。
below： 不值得
e.g. Such behavior is below you. 你不值得这样做。
beneath： 不值得
e.g. His book is beneath criticism. 他的书不值得一评。
beyond： 在……以外，超出
e.g. The theory is so complicated that it is certainly beyond the reach of beginners in this field.
这一理论太复杂了，这一领域的初学者当然不能领会。
but： 而不；若不是
e.g. She would have fallen but that I caught her.
若不是我抓住她，她就跌倒了。
but for： 要不是，倘没有
e.g. But for my brother’s help， I would not have finished the work. 倘没有我兄弟的帮助，我是不会完成这项工作的。
except： 除……之外
e.g. Every one of us， except him， went to see the exhibition.
除他以外，我们都去参观了展览会。
except for： （1）除……之外；（2）没有，若非
e.g. （1） Except for John， the whole class passed the test. 除了约翰，全班都通过了考试。
（2） I’d have been lost except for you.
如果没有你，我早就迷路了。
far from： 远非；绝不
e.g. I’m far from thinking his wrong. 我决不认为他错了。
in place of： 代替；而不
e.g. If I hadn’t got a cold I’d be working in place of lying here in bed. 要不是感冒，我才不会躺在床上而在工作了。
instead of： 代替；而不
e.g. Instead of going to the cinema I stayed at home reading a novel. 我没有去看电影，而在家看小说。
off： 去掉；戒掉
e.g. He is off smoking（liquor）. 他戒烟（酒）了。
other than： 不同于；非
e.g. The truth is quite other than what you think.
事实真相同你想的完全不同。
out of： 没有；缺乏
e.g. We are out of firewood， let’s go and gather some.
没柴火了，咱们去拣一点吧。
past： （范围、限度、能力等）超过；越过
e.g. I was past caring now， so I ordered coffee for myself and an ice？鄄cream and coffee for her.
到这时候，我什么也不在乎了，为自己叫了咖啡，为她叫了一份冰激凌和咖啡。
rather than： （与其……）倒不如
e.g. I， rather than you， should do the work. 该做这项工作的是我，而不是你。
save： 除……以外
e.g. All save him had gone. 除他以外大家都走了。
under： 低于……；少于……
e.g. Under fifty people were there. 在那里的人不足五十。
unlike： 不像……；和……不同
e.g. The picture is quite unlike him. 这张照片一点不像他。
wanting： 缺；无
e.g. Wanting mutual support， victory is impossible.
没有互相支持就不可能胜利。
within： 不超过；在……范围以内
e.g. The department store is within ten meters of the bus stop. 百货公司离公共汽车站不到十米。
with the exception of： 除……以外
e.g. I know nothing with the exception of what I read in the papers. 除了我在报纸上看到的以外，其它我都不知道。
without： 没有；毫无
e.g. He drove away without saying good？鄄bye. 他没有告别就开车走了。
关于否定，不少语法书都对此有所论述。本文只不过是对用于否定意义的介词（或介词词组）作一些归纳和总结，其中若有什么不妥之处，还望读者诸君不吝赐教。
